About the Brickyard Collegiate
The Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship, which will be held Oct. 10-13 at the Brickyard at Riverside is hosted by the Mercer University Golf Team.
A total of 15 teams 9 of top 25 teams as of 5/1/08 will take place in the competition, including Georgia, which was the national runner-up at the 2007 NCAA tournament, Georgia Tech and Clemson, both of which participated in the regionals.
It will be the largest event of its kind held at the Brickyard at Riverside, which re-opened in June 2005 with a different name and a different layout.
Alfred Sams Jr., co-owner of the Brickyard at Riverside, enlisted the help of Mark McCumber to re-design the course, and it attracted the attention of Golf Digest this year, which ranked the Brickyard at Riverside No. 12 in the state.
More than a year ago, Sams approached Pope and Mercer golf coach Andrew Treadway about the possibility of organizing a collegiate golf event. After securing sponsors for the event, which will benefit the Macon Golf for Kids organization, invitations were sent out to various collegiate teams.
The tournament will open with a practice round Friday, which will include a competition among the top golfers from each participating team. Practice round followed by team shootout Friday and Tournament begins Saturday and runs through Monday.
