Georgia Claims 2012 Brickyard Collegiate Title

MACON, Ga. – The Georgia men’s golf team wrapped up a dominating performance in the 2012 Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday, posting a team score of 280 to win the event by 14 strokes over Georgia Tech.  The Bulldogs also took home a share of individual medalist honors, as sophomore Sam Straka roared to a tie for first place on the strength of a course record 64 in the final round.

Straka’s 64 combined with scores of 75 and 69 in the opening two rounds to tie him with Georgia State’s Jonathan Grey for the individual championship.  Grey booked scores of 72, 67 and 69 over three days to finish with a 56-hole total of 208.

Georgia’s title marked the team’s fourth title in the six-year history of the event.  Georgia Tech (862), North Florida (865), Chattanooga (867) and Virginia Tech (867) rounded out the top-five teams.

Mercer battled its way to a program-best finish at the Brickyard Collegiate, wrapping up the event in sixth place with a score of 872.  The Bears were led by junior James Beale, who carded a 2-under 70 on the final day of play to place in a tie for eighth place overall.
