Macon Golf for Kids (in application to become a First Tee chapter in late 2007, early 2008; www.thefirsttee.org is an all volunteer organization dedicated to providing golf and character-building programs in the Macon area to underserved children.
Macon Golf for Kids has a 15-year lease with the City of Macon for the 40 acres formerly known as the Old Executive 9 at Bowden Golf Course. Thanks to a Community Foundation of Central Georgia grant, Macon Golf for Kids is building a practice facility/driving range parallel to #18. As of August 1, the tee box has a sprinkler system and is covered with Bermuda sod. It will be ready for use by September. A sprinkler system will be installed in the fairway in early 2008.
In order to reach the targeted youth population, Macon Golf for Kids partners primarily, though not exclusively, with the Macon Housing Authority. The first 6 week session with 15 children from David Homes began in April and the second session concluded in July with 10 children from Murphey Homes. Over the next few months, other Housing Authority neighborhoods and youth organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club will be engaged. The goal is to positively affect at least 600 children a year.
Macon Golf for Kids believes that all children should be exposed to the great game of golf, a game o life, for life.
