MACON, Ga. – Mercer University, in collaboration with the Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club, kicked off the 2010 Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship on Thursday with the practice round. Thursday also served as a media day for the participants. The 15-team field is highlighted by the 2010 NCAA Champions - and defending Brickyard Collegiate championship team - Augusta State University. Among the other teams competing in the fourth-year event are the two-time Brickyard Collegiate Champions (and 2010 SEC champions) University of Georgia, the 2010 ACC champions Georgia Tech, Boston College, UT-Chattanooga, Clemson, Colorado State, Florida State, Gonzaga, North Florida, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas-Arlington, Virginia Tech and host Mercer. On Thursday, each team also participated in the Macon Golf for Kids Shootout Challenge, a friendly competition designed to support the local club. Each coach picked a golfer to represent their school and that golfer paired with another team’s player to form a two-man team. The teams played holes 17 and 18 twice, with two teams being eliminated after the completion of each hole. The winning team had 1,000 dollars donated to Macon Golf for Kids in that school’s names. All three rounds of competition begin at 8:30 a.m. starting Friday morning. Friday, Saturday and Sunday each feature 18 holes of action before the victors are crowned at Sunday afternoon’s awards ceremony. Admission to the event is free of charge for all fans.
