| Tringale Gets PGA Tour Card | ||
By Curtis Zupke - The Orange County Register Cameron Tringale didn't go through many theatrics as PGA Tour Qualifying School Finals was winding down on Monday. Tringale (Georgia Tech) was hovering near the cut line and didn't know where he stood, but the steel-nerved 22-year-old wasn't sweating it out. "I felt fairly good walking off the course," Tringale said. "I was at peace with that and was hoping for the best." The best turned out to be PGA Tour card for 2010, which Tringale barely secured with a tie for 19th. The top 20 players earned cards. Tringale knew it was no small moment. His cell phone was jammed with text messages from friends, including private coach Tom Sargent of Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa and former high school coach Bob Bosanko. "I think everyone who grows up wanting to play professional golf (dreams about this)," said Tringale on Wednesday from Florida., where he was undergoing rookie orientation. "The PGA Tour is the best tour in the world. I've been thinking about it for a while." Tringale achieved his goal on his first try in Q-School thanks to a terrific finish at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. He only had four bogeys over his final 54 holes and played his last 36 holes at 8-under par. Tringale began the final round 42nd but turned in four birdies and a 40-foot eagle on his 15th hole. He shot rounds of 70-74-69-73-69-67 to finish 10-under for 108 holes. A three-time All-America selection at Georgia Tech, Tringale cited his participation in this summer's Walker Cup as preparation for the intensity of Q-School. "That was probably one of the biggest things," he said. "The pressure is similar. It's being on a big stage, having the media out there. It all helps." Tringale has only played in one PGA Tour event, missing the cut in June's U.S. Open. He hasn't mapped out a schedule, but he will try to play tournaments close to his residence in San Juan Capistrano. "I will play whatever I can get into," he said. "I'm going to do my best and play as many West Coast events as I can." |
